WARNING against SCAMMERS & POP-UP AGENCIES: Whoever you eventually book through for accommodation for the Olympic Games (or indeed for any trip to London), be diligent in your selection of agency:
Scammers
The London vacation rentals industry is plagued by scammers at the best of times, and we expect this will only get worse for London 2012.
Tips to verify against scammers:
(i) suspiciously poor English in website text;
(ii) improper contact details (eg a cell phone number, not a landline) or no registered address given;
(iii) "too good to be true" pricing;
(iv) payment methods other than via bank transfer to accounts held at reputable UK banks or credit card/debit card payment facility (especially requests to pay via Western Union - run a mile!);
(v) lack of legal entity information provided (eg company / VAT registration number). See below on how to verify this; or
(vi) lack of verified customer reviews / testimonials.
Pop-Up Agencies
In addition, we recommend that you avoid "pop-up" companies (those which are legitimate but established solely to serve this event) since:
(i) they will lack the critical logistical expertise to serve this extremely busy lettings period;
(ii) they won't have an experienced portfolio, only property owners wanting to profit from the Olympic Games (this is important as it will have a strong bearing on the preparation level and condition of the property being let); and
(iii) pop-up companies have no reputation to protect and are solely interested in short term profits, which will dramatically affect the level of service you'll receive and prices you'll pay.
In each case, to protect against disappointment:
(i) check the company's reviews / testimonials on a verified listing program such as FlipKey (part of TripAdvisor)
(ii) check the company's registration number or name on the Companies House register (follow below link)
http://wck2.companieshouse.gov.uk/8459f2968ffa67d8138b724b0440a43a/wcfra...
(iii) trust your instinct - as they say, if it seems too good to be true, it most probably is!
