London’s Mews – A little touch of tranquillity in a bustling city

If you think of London, normally the great monuments spring to mind – Big Ben, the London Eye, Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament to name but a few.

However, London has many hidden gems that hide beneath the iconic skyline, most notably our secret mews streets.

Mews are narrow cobblestone streets tucked behind the busy main roads. Previously used as a horse stables before cars were more commonplace, these bijoux buildings have been converted into idyllic coveted homes concealed in London’s side streets.

These beautiful homes are really, very quiet – the houses are generally on a residential side street with little to no traffic apart from residents. They also are really rather spacious, with many having basement conversions to offer additional living and sleeping quarters, some even have a garage which is a huge plus.

However, the best part of these streets is that they are simply incredibly pretty.

We are lucky enough to have several of these beautiful homes on our portfolio in some of the most picturesque mews in the city. Ideally located and beautifully presented, these tranquil London vacation rentals are the perfect home from home for all coming to explore the capital.

Henniker Mews – from £325 per night

A street with homes painted in subdued pastels, pitched roofs and climbing wisteria, it feels as though you could be in a country village rather than in the heart of Chelsea.

This beautiful London short let is spacious and contemporary, sleeping up to 4 guests Henniker Mews is the ideal base for small families or groups over for a holiday in the capital. Just off the Fulham Road and moments from the King's Road, both filled with fabulous boutiques and high street shops; an easy reach, either by foot or bicycle, from Sloane Square: this is the place to be. The Saatchi Gallery, a few minutes away, will delight all art fans, and a short and picturesque walk will take you down onto Chelsea embankment and the Thames, to the foot of the iconic Albert Bridge.

Stanhope Mews South – from £155 per night

One of my favourites is Stanhope Mews South – a small street in South Kensington just a 4- minute walk from the thrum of Gloucester Road tube station, this quaint residential street is always full of colour thanks to the residents’ flower pots and window boxes with trailing flora.

You will have quick links to the whole city, but you have masses to explore right on your doorstep too. Take a short 5 minute walk for Kensington Gardens which borders the famous and magnificent Hyde Park, complete with the winding Serpentine Lake (which even has a swimming area if you’re feeling brave!) and large green spaces, perfect for summer picnics and afternoon strolls.

Codrington Mews – from £165 per night

A street unlike any other in London thanks to its huge murals. XL recordings has an office here, and the studio is emblazoned with album artwork. Just round the corner is our own vacation rental.

This is one of London's most exclusive neighbourhoods and this mews is amongst its most desirable streets, making this Notting Hill holiday apartment a hugely popular choice for visitors to London on holiday or those seeking corporate accommodation.

When you are ready to venture out of your quiet London vacation rental, you'll find yourself perfectly nestled within the bustling Notting Hill Streets. Wandering down the colourful streets, it is not surprising that the area is home to many literary and bohemian festivals including the soulful Notting Hill Carnival in August and the Notting Hill International Book Festival in April.  Don’t forget you’re within walking distance of the magnificent Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park, perfect for a morning walk (or run for the more energetic).

Although there are so many to explore, it is worth spending an afternoon wandering down these idyllic streets even if you simply stumble across one on your travels around the capital.

They may not be as grandiose as the Tower of London or St Paul’s Cathedral, but they make London just as unique and intriguing, and your holiday snaps will be the envy of all your friends and family.
