As the weather cools down, the fun in London heats up! London is well known and loved for its abundance of activities and exciting things to do, and the winter time is no exception. From top class museums to restaurants in igloos, it’s safe to say that London is sure geared up for the winter fun! Here is our guide to the top activities & attractions to be enjoyed during your winter break in the capital:
London’s dazzling Christmas light displays certainly don’t disappoint! Thousands of people gather every year on Oxford Street to experience the magical moment when the Christmas lights are switched for another festive season! This major event hosts live performances from celebrities, TV personalities, musicians, children’s performers, and more. This year the Oxford Street lights will be switched on on November 7th.
If there’s one thing that Brits love, it’s a Sunday roast at the pub! If you’re feeling a bit chilly from a day out seeing the sights, there’s no better way to warm up then popping into a traditional English pub for a meal and a pint (in true English spirit). Here are some of our teams favourites:
Michaela recommends: The Churchill Arms, Kensington. "This beautiful pub in Kensington is covered from top to bottom with flowers all over the exterior! Inside, you’ll find very quirky decor and a delicious Thai menu. Don’t forget to bring your camera! I’d recommend combining lunch or dinner with a trip to Kensington Gardens / Kensington Palace.”
Holly recommends: The Hereford Arms, South Kensington. "This cosy Victorian pub does an incredible Sunday roast, but it usually books out completely - so be sure to plan your visit in advance and book a table!”
Hannah recommends: The Sun, Clapham Common. “The atmosphere at the Sun is great - I’d recommend going on a Thursday evening to watch Billy Keane perform, a Irish acoustic singer whom performs every week. “
Brendan recommends: The Oyster Rooms, Fulham. "A straightforward, traditional pub. Nothing too fancy, but the food and prices are great! Service is generally speedy too, so if you’re looking for a quick bite for great value - head here! You generally don’t need to book a table.”
If you’re visiting London during the festive season, paying a visit to as least one of the cities Christmas markets! London has a range of Christmas Markets to explore, you can find more info about them here. Our tip is head to the Barbican and Leadenhall Christmas Markets if it’s a drizzly day- they are undercover, so a little rain won’t get in the way of bargain and treasure hunting.
London has some incredible places to go ice skating in the Winter! Glide on down to one of these ice skating spots for some outdoor family fun (we recommend purchasing tickets in advance for all).
Natural History Museum
Easily one of the most magical places to be this winter! Ice skating at the Natural History museum is something everyone should experience during a winter holiday in London. Set against the backdrop of the stunning Museum, visitors can glide along the ice among stunning fairy lights nestled in front-covered trees, with the scent of mulled wine and s’mores lingering in the air. Beautiful!
The surrounding architecture here is enough to stop in you in your tracks - literally. It truly is magical to glide your way around such an iconic building in the heart of London. This popular attraction usually books up very quickly, so don’t forget to book your tickets!
Canary Wharf Ice Rink
This year’s these theme is ‘LuminoCity’ - visitors will be amazed by the dazzling effect of over 8,000 LED lights sparking below the ice! There’s also a heated outdoor terrace and bar once you’ve finished, or for those would rather spectate.
Wrap up warm, and head to one of London’s stunning parks for a stroll. It may not be picnic weather, but you can pick up a hot chocolate along the way.
We recommend Hyde Park, St James’s, Kensington Gardens, Richmond Park, and Hampstead Heath.
Dine in an Igloo
You don’t need to go to the North Pole to say you’ve been in an igloo - just come to London! Each festive season, igloos pop up in various locations all over the city! We recommend Winterland Winterland in Fulham! Expect to find Winter lodges, igloos, games (such as curling, mini golf, ping pong), fondue, mulled wine, and more! What more could you want this Christmas! You can find out more about the Igloo pop ups and where to book them here.
